Obradovic Questions NBA Europe and EuroLeague Fairness

Partizan's coach shares his strong opinions on the NBA's European plans and calls for changes within the EuroLeague.
Obradovic Questions NBA Europe and EuroLeague Fairness

Following Partizan’s recent game against Olympiacos, legendary coach Zeljko Obradovic shared some strong thoughts on major issues affecting European basketball. Instead of just focusing on the match, he discussed the potential NBA expansion into Europe, the fairness of the EuroLeague’s structure, and the demanding schedule his players face.

Obradovic expressed deep concerns about the future of European basketball. He questioned the motives behind the NBA’s proposed European division and criticized what he sees as a lack of unity among EuroLeague clubs. He also highlighted inequalities within the EuroLeague system, urging for all teams to be treated fairly to protect the competition’s integrity.

🤔 Questioning NBA’s Move into Europe

Recent news revealed a list of cities planned for an NBA Europe league, but surprisingly, the basketball-loving city of Belgrade—home to both Partizan and Crvena Zvezda—was not included. Obradovic believes the NBA is expanding because its current market isn’t enough for them. He urged European basketball to unite and “protect” itself from this expansion. He expressed disappointment in EuroLeague clubs that might be making private deals, calling it a “big shame” and a sign of dishonesty that could weaken their collective position.

⚖️ Seeking Equal Rights for All Clubs

Obradovic also pointed out a key problem within the EuroLeague itself. Currently, only 13 of the 20 teams are shareholders with ownership stakes and decision-making power. He argued that for the competition to be truly fair and strong, all 20 teams should have the same rights and obligations. He mentioned that his own club, Partizan, receives no money from TV rights, yet they work hard to build a competitive team for their incredibly passionate fans, who fill the arena with over 20,000 people for every game.

🗓️ The Challenge of a Non-Stop Schedule

The coach highlighted the intense physical and mental strain on players due to the packed schedule. With 38 EuroLeague games, plus domestic leagues and national cups, there is almost no time for rest or practice. He explained that the official preseason is only 35 days, but after accounting for medical checks, media duties, and necessary rest days, teams are left with very little time to prepare. This non-stop cycle makes it difficult for teams to improve and increases the risk of injuries.

💪 Staying Positive Despite Challenges

Injuries are a major consequence of the tough schedule, and Obradovic noted that clubs with bigger rosters and more players have a clear advantage. He shared that his team started the season missing key players, including playmaker Carlik Jones, which made things even more difficult. Despite these challenges, Obradovic remains committed to his team. “I’m happy with my team, I’ll keep believing in them,” he said, showing his determination to keep fighting through this tough period.
