Former professional basketball player Vladimir Stimac was arrested during recent protests in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. He was among dozens of people detained by police following clashes between supporters and opponents of the government.
The arrest of a well-known athlete has drawn more attention to the ongoing political tensions in the country. This situation shows how public figures can sometimes become involved in wider social and political events.
👮 What Led to the Arrest?
Vladimir Stimac was one of 37 people arrested for what the Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs described as “disturbing public order” during an unregistered public gathering. He was allegedly encouraging protesters to confront another group and the police. The incident took place in front of the Serbian parliament building.
⚖️ The Legal Process
After his initial arrest, Stimac was held overnight and released the next day. However, he was detained again shortly after, following an order from the prosecutor’s office, for a period of 48 hours. He is expected to be questioned, and a decision on how to proceed with his case will be made afterward. His lawyer is reportedly filing an appeal against the detention.
📣 A Look at the Protests
These protests are part of a series of anti-government demonstrations that have been happening in Serbia for several months. They were sparked by a tragic incident last November when a railway station canopy collapsed in the city of Novi Sad, killing 16 people. The cause of the collapse is still under investigation and has led to public anger and calls for accountability.
🏀 A Look Back at His Career
Vladimir Stimac had a long and successful basketball career from 2004 to 2023. Representing Serbia, he won silver medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics, the 2014 FIBA World Cup, and the 2017 EuroBasket. At the club level, he played for several top European teams in the EuroLeague, including Crvena Zvezda, Fenerbahce, Anadolu Efes, and FC Bayern Munich.
