As the new 2025-26 EuroLeague season approaches, key discussions have centered on two major topics: the uncertain status of Israeli teams and the landmark addition of a new team from Dubai. At a recent preseason press conference, Euroleague Basketball CEO Paulius Motiejunas addressed these important issues, outlining the league’s careful approach.
The league is taking a “wait-and-see” stance on the participation of Israeli clubs, emphasizing that safety is the top priority. While aiming to keep politics separate from sports, officials are closely monitoring external developments. Paulius Motiejunas explained that while the league believes politics should not be involved in sports, it is actively “following the situation” concerning Israeli teams like Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Tel Aviv. He stressed that the safety of players, teams, and fans is the most important factor. The league will observe decisions made by other major sports organizations, such as UEFA, but will ultimately consult with its own clubs before taking any action.

On a more positive note, Motiejunas officially welcomed Dubai to the EuroLeague family. He described the expansion as a great opportunity to bring the passion of EuroLeague basketball to new markets. He praised Dubai’s commitment and efficiency, noting how quickly they turned the idea of joining the league into a reality. “If they want something, they can achieve something,” he remarked, “and if they’re focused, they’ll get it done.”

While the expansion is exciting, it also comes with unique challenges. The Dubai team’s CEO, Dejan Kamenjasevic, spoke about the complicated travel schedule his team will face. He mentioned that even medical experts have offered different advice on the best travel and recovery plans for players after games. Kamenjasevic acknowledged that the team is entering uncharted territory, and their biggest challenge will be keeping players safe and healthy amidst the demanding schedule.
