CSKA Moscow, a well-known name in European basketball, is not expected to rejoin the EuroLeague anytime soon. The team’s president, Andrey Vatutin, recently stated that he sees no clear path for the team’s return to the continent’s top competition.
The Russian team was suspended from the EuroLeague in February 2022 following the start of the war in Ukraine. According to Vatutin, the circumstances that led to the suspension have not changed, making a comeback unlikely in the near future. He believes that basketball will not be an exception to the wider political situation.
🚧 No Significant Changes Expected
Vatutin explained that he has been asked about a potential return for several years but doesn’t see any reason for optimism. “The reasons for which Russian teams are suspended from international competitions remain in place,” he noted, adding that he doesn’t see any “significant grounds” for the situation to be resolved. He believes that the trend of isolation is likely to continue, affecting sports as well.
✈️ Practical Challenges Add to the Difficulty
Beyond the political issues, Vatutin pointed out several practical problems that would make competing in the EuroLeague almost impossible. He mentioned challenges with flights, financial payments, and obtaining visas for travel. These logistical hurdles would prevent the team from functioning smoothly and participating fully in the league, even if the suspension were lifted.
🏆 Focusing on Domestic Success
With the door to the EuroLeague currently closed, CSKA Moscow has shifted its focus to the VTB United League, a regional competition. The team has found great success there, recently winning the league for the 12th time in its history. Looking ahead, the club is building for the future, having recently extended the contract of head coach Andreas Pistiolis until 2028.
