Panionios Guard Lountzis Sidelined with Knee Injury

Panionios has received difficult news as their guard, Michalis Lountzis, is facing a long time away from the court due to a serious knee injury. The 27-year-old was having a strong season, making this a significant blow to the team’s plans in both domestic and European competitions.

The injury has unfortunately been confirmed as a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), one of the more serious injuries for a basketball player. This means Lountzis will require surgery and a lengthy recovery period, likely sidelining him for the rest of the 2025-26 season.

🤕 A Major Setback for Lountzis

Panionios announced that medical tests have confirmed Michalis Lountzis suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear. This type of knee injury requires surgery and a recovery process that typically lasts for six months or more. As a result, it is very likely that he will not be able to play again for the remainder of the season, a tough situation for any athlete.

🏀 A Big Loss for the Team

Lountzis has been a key player for Panionios. Before his injury, he was performing very well in the BKT EuroCup, averaging 10.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.0 assists. He was also making a big impact in the Greek league with an average of 12.8 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. His absence will be deeply felt by the team on both offense and defense.

💪 A Tough Road Ahead

This is not the first time Michalis Lountzis has faced such a difficult challenge. Back in 2019, he suffered a similar cruciate ligament injury. Having overcome a major injury before, his past experience may give him the strength and determination needed for the long rehabilitation journey that lies ahead.

🏆 An Experienced Career

Despite this setback, Lountzis has built an impressive career. He has played for top European clubs like Panathinaikos and Olympiacos in the EuroLeague and has won three Greek League championships. He has also proudly represented the Greek national team, winning gold medals at the junior level and competing in major international tournaments like the FIBA World Cup and EuroBasket.
