Veteran Shawn Dawson Rejoins Bnei Herzliya

European basketball teams are making key moves as the Basketball Champions League (BCL) season approaches. In a notable signing, veteran player Shawn Dawson has returned to the Israeli club Bnei Herzliya for his third stint. Meanwhile, VEF Riga has also strengthened its roster by adding Latvian guard Toms Leimanis.

These transfers highlight a common strategy among teams: bringing in experienced players to provide stability and skill for the demanding BCL competition. Dawson’s familiarity with Bnei Herzliya makes him a valuable asset, while Leimanis brings a wealth of international experience to VEF Riga. Both signings are aimed at boosting their teams’ chances in the group stage.

🏡 A Familiar Face Returns

Shawn Dawson, a 31-year-old winger, has officially rejoined Bnei Herzliya. This marks his third time playing for the club, following previous stints in the 2017-18 and 2021-22 seasons. He has signed a three-month contract, which includes an option to extend it for the rest of the season. His return is expected to provide a significant boost to the team as they compete in Group D of the BCL.

🏆 A Career of Experience

Dawson brings a great deal of experience to the court. He has already played in 27 BCL games and has been successful with Bnei Herzliya before, helping them win Israel’s State Cup and reach the league finals in 2022. Beyond his club career in Israel and Spain, the American-Israeli player has also represented the Israeli national team in major tournaments like EuroBasket and the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers.

✍️ VEF Riga Adds a Veteran Guard

In other news, Latvian champions VEF Riga have signed 31-year-old combo guard Toms Leimanis. His contract will cover the team’s BCL campaign. Leimanis is no stranger to the competition, having played in 18 BCL games previously. After gaining experience in several European countries and most recently in Mexico, he returns to his home region to help VEF Riga compete in Group F.

🏀 Understanding the BCL Format

For fans new to the tournament, the Basketball Champions League features 32 teams divided into eight groups for the regular season. The top team from each group will advance directly to the Round of 16. The second and third-place teams will get another chance to move forward by competing in a best-of-three Play-In series, making every game in the group stage crucial.
